Feel guilt for wishing
dreading that it won't come true
fearing that it will

There is no escape
no clear path to victory
wishing selfishly

Having no control
waiting, either bated joy
or disappointment

Waves across the lake
a gaggle of honking geese
skimming the surface

and mallard couples
heads underwater, tails up
bobbing like buoys

water's edge, young boy
welcoming the start of spring
fishing pole in hand
